Pediatric Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy

Although Dr. Tamez uses the latest technology (radiofrequency technology: Coblator or Harmonic Scalpel), removing the tonsils is usually very painful. Children recover much quicker and in general tolerate a tonsillectomy much better than adults. An intracapsular tonsillectomy, which is a partial tonsillectomy, is another option, but a small amount of tonsil remains. The recovery is much quicker (4-5 days as opposed to two weeks). Dr. Tamez offers intracapsular tonsillectomies to a limited number of patients who meet criteria.

The biggest risk of a tonsillectomy is bleeding up to two weeks after surgery but the risk is low assuming that the diet and hydration recommendations are followed.

In children, the adenoids are always removed at the same time as a tonsillectomy. The adenoids are removed because of nasal obstruction, chronic adenoidtonsillitis and chronic ear infections. Adenoids are tonsil tissue behind the nose. Under general anesthesia, the adenoids are removed through the mouth. The procedure takes about 10 minutes and is accompanied by minimal discomfort and congestion.
