Pediatric Nose and Sinus Services

Nasal obstruction and headaches from chronic sinusitis is very common in children. A child who does not breathe well usually does not sleep well and snores. A child that does not sleep well can become irritable, hyperactive, have difficulty concentrating, bedwetting etc… A child that does not breathe well through the nose tends to develop a high arched and narrow palate and long face (termed "Adenoid Facies"). Most kids who are recommended a palatal spreader have this problem.

Other common sinus complaints include recurrent infections (although many chronic sinusitis sufferers do not experience recurrent infections); nasal obstruction/congestion; sinus pressure/headaches; postnasal drainage and cough.

Maximal medical therapy is always attempted first and surgery is only recommended if a patient fails medical therapy. Chronic ear infections/Otitis media with effusion can also contribute to nasal obstruction. An adenoidectomy alone may be all that is required and in a minority of cases minimal functional endoscopic sinus surgery is indicated. Minimal septoplasty is usually not required.
