Patients with Cholesteatomas (skin tumors of the middle ear and mastoid) or with chronically draining ears may require a tympanomastoidectomy. This surgery involves making an incision behind the ear drum, drilling the mastoid bone and allowing for communication between the mastoid and middle ear and removing all skin and swelling. There are two types: Canal Wall Up (CWU) and Canal Wall Down (CWD) tympanomastoidectomies. It is not uncommon for patients with Cholesteatomas to require revision surgery.
